is it labor if i lose my mucous plug

When it comes to labor and birth, mucous is sort of a funny thing. In pregnancy, your body produces quite a bit of it. Mucous works to form a barrier at the base of the uterus to help protect the baby’s environment from infection. You probably won’t be surprised that the barrier will expel itself…

While breastfeeding is a critical health imperative in our community as we battle unconscionably high infant mortality rates, low birthweight babies and poor infant and child health statistics, it is also a gesture of empowerment and self-determination for a community that is constantly undermined.
_
There are unique experiences and challenges that BIPOC people experience as it relates to breastfeeding- Black women in this country historically and ancestrally have a very charged history with breastfeeding- which we explore in our @mamaglow Doula Homeschool Program and in our work with expectant and new families. There are not as many Black Lactation consultants to refer Black people to work with. Many people live in areas where access to care is limited and culturally competent care is virtually inaccessible. So many folks from our communities experience food justice and food security issues and are flooded with unhealthy food options. Formula companies aggressively market to people of color. We often lack peer, partner and family support to encourage breastfeeding/ chestfeeding/ body feeding.
_
New parents need a support system to ensure breastfeeding success. We need support to anchor and grow as mothers and birthing people. Black women have long inherited a role of being strong, this is our time to change the legacy. It’s time to ask for help, its time to be soft, it’s time to support those around us with help. We are raising a village of children but it also takes a village to raise up parents. We need examples to see. And we need extra sets of hands to support us.
_
In a society where breastfeeding is constantly undermined, we need all the support we can get to keep going. Saluting all those who are doing their best to feed their babies the best way they know how- whether you breastfeed, chestfeed, bottle feed, formula feed... we salute you. Saluting the care providers who support along this continuum.

“We weren’t meant to be alone as new mommas. It’s a time when we need our sisters, mamas, friends, and doulas, our elders and our village. As a momma of four, I know this personally. And as a midwife-MD ( @avivaromm ) I know the difference that postpartum support can make in your health and your whole family’s well-being.

Yet, most of us don’t get the postpartum support we need. Even from a medical perspective, it's a completely neglected part of the childbearing experience.
Some new mothers understand that the problem is a deficit in society, not in themselves; but, unfortunately, still don’t get care unless they line it up themselves. This is in stark contrast to postpartum cultures worldwide where the new mother is doted on, tended to, massaged, and cared for until she is ready to emerge into her larger cultural group, celebrated and rested.

Add COVID-19 to the mix and the PP experience can be even harder and more isolating than usual.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t get the support you need to have the postpartum experience you and baby both deserve - to feel nurtured, healthy and celebrated, and to experience the major physical, hormonal, psychological, emotional, and spiritual transition that happens during this time.

Here are some tips for PP support during this time:

1. Stay connected to your midwife, doula, or postpartum doula virtually
2. Prepare ahead for all the things you’ll need: snacks, meals, teas, herbs
3. Have a virtual support or mommy group lined up
4. Sheltering in place doesn’t mean staying inside: get outside, take social distance walks, etc.
5. Pamper yourself, even if just with a longer shower
6. Sleep when baby sleeps, keep your blood sugar steady, and stay hydrated; new mama herbal teas and a prenatal vitamin can provide that extra support you need
7. if you’re on the edge of coping, get extra support: have a person in your pod shelter in place for 2 weeks before baby is born. If nobody can, your mental health should be prioritized over quarantine; just make sure whoever comes over doesn’t have symptoms, washes hands, and wears a mask...
"Baby girl you were born not only during a global "Baby girl you were born not only during a global pandemic but during a movement to fight for freedom, liberation and justice to create a better future for you!

I’ll admit it wasn’t easy giving birth in the hospital right now; especially being in Texas. I replaced my fear with prayer 🙏🏽 . I’m thankful for my husband being by my side every step of the way. We’re so happy to be home with our baby girl! Although it’s not the same without friends and family coming around to see her; I really appreciate all the love and support even though it’s from a distance. To any mom giving birth during this time; stay strong 💪🏾 you can do it!"
