Doula Myths Part 1

I won’t need a doula. My partner will be there and we’ll want our privacy. We also want to focus on what the doctors say.

We hear you! Birth certainly happens without doulas every single day. We know you can do it. It will happen! You will give birth, no matter how it happens.

Here are a few ways you may not have considered that a professional doula helps to protect your goal of having a special, family event.

  1. Let’s be honest. Privacy in a hospital is a rarity. But while a doula might be seen as “just an extra person,” our purpose for being there is to protect your space! We can create more privacy by providing well-timed suggestions for a shower, a stroll just the two of you, or even a question phrased to help you get more information. This can even “buy” more time from your providers if it’s safe to do so.
  2. Documenting your event. We have eyes and ears to witness the details of your birth in a way that is not likely to be remembered by you or your partner. We will help preserve your birth memory so you can process it later in a way that works for you.
  3. Having a doula enhances being able to hear what the medical providers say. We help you process what you’ve heard allowing you to take a more active role in your care.
  4. We remain in your corner after the birth! Partners are there for us in ways that no one else can be. Yet having a knowledgeable birth doula to call on, someone who can connect you with resources, troubleshoot your challenges, and just listen to your concerns makes hiring a birth doula beyond worth it!
